Ashagram was begun in 1994 in Chelannur on eighty cents of land when Fr. Justin Koyipuram was the provincial. The St.Thomas Association for Rural Service (STARS) started in 1991 and is now known as Society for Total Advancement and Rehabilitation Services. The first secretary of STARS was Fr. Chacko Puthukulangara. The mission of STARS is to improve the lot of the poor and marginalised, and enable them to lead a meaningful life with freedom and dignity. STARS has in its ambit various groups and organizations. In 1999, a new project was envisaged for this center for the training and the rehabilitation of the disabled. Six houses were built to provide temporary accommodation for the disabled and their family. A stabilizer unit was set up here for creating employment opportunities for the women of the locality.A community development center was built here in 2000.Chelanur Ashagram is the brain child of Fr.Thomas Koottiyaniyil.
