Fr. Thomas Thundathil was an inspired person. His devotion was seer-like in its power. This devotion gave him a vision for a spiritual journey that was to stay forever emblazoned in the spiritual landscape of the the Christian devotees of Kerala. Fr. Thundathil’s vision was to celebrate the Way of the Cross, commemorating the passion of the Christ during the Lenten season. This was a pilgrimage up a 16 km long hazardous path through Thamarassery Churam road.His vision was shared by Fr.Thomas Koottiyani and Fr.John Panamthottam.The first Way of the Cross was held on 17th April 1992. Mar Jacob Thoonkuzhy, the then Bishop, gave the message on the occasion at the last station of the Way at Lakkidi. The pilgrimage struck a powerful chord among believers in Wayanad. Fr.ThomasThundathil, a man of immense creative energy and a great mass puller for any noble cause, worked the details of the vision meticulously. With the result that it evoked a growing response from people over the years and today people from all over Kerala participate in this tremendous spiritual exercise. A centre called Gethsemane (Adivaram) was, in time, constructed as a rest house for the pilgrims at Adivaram and it is here that devotees congregate to begin the symbolic walk.A huge statue of a praying Jesus Christ overlooks the national highway, seemingly blessing travellers not only up the precarious mountain path, but also as they journey through life.
