Kalpetta Fatima Matha Mission Hospital

Thirty-three years ago, when there were hardly any medical or transportation facilities in the area, the CMI province decided to start a hospital in Wayanad. A small hospital run by Dr. SebastianV. J. and Dr. Tresa Sebastian in a rented building was purchased in 1972 by the province and was renamed Fathima Mata Mission Hospital. Dn. Joseph Mukalel was its first manager. The lateFr.James Pallivathuckal was the founder. In 1973, a new five-acre plot was purchased on PinangodeRoad and a hospital building was constructed. Then it was a 13-bedded hospital with departments for General Medicine, GeneralSurgery and Gynaecology. The hospital was shifted to the present site on 3rd October, 1974. By then, it was a 50-bedded hospital. The Reverend Sisters of the FCCMananthavadi Province started their service in the hospital from July 1973.

The structure of a new hospital building was completed thanks to the hardwork of Fr. George Ezhanikkat. An apartment to provide accommodation for doctors of the hospital was constructed by Fr.Mattam. A homeopathy unit was started at the hospital in 2006.A new transformer connection was given to the hospital in Feb2009.Since Fr. Joseph Vayalil took charge as director of the hospital on 26 June 2007 it started to make a name for itself with its quality of care and sophistication. Now it has grown into a speciality hospital with 200 beds and several departments.

The hospital has all major departments such as Medicine,Surgery, Gynaecology, Pedeatrics, Orthopaedics, Urology,Nephrology etc. In October 2009, the first dialysis unit in Wayanad was started in Fatima Hospital. Currently, there are six dialysis machines. Working in three shifts it can give dialysis to 18 patients a day. A charity fund for dialysis patients has also been set up to help the needy.

The Chavara block of the hospital which was inaugurated on June 22, 2009 contains an operation theatre complex. The operation theatre, NICU, MICU and labour rooms were inaugurated on 20th Oct. 2009.The block also contains cardiac and paediatric intensive care units.A waste water treatment plant is in the process of being set up at the hospital.
