Devagiri St.Joseph's Monastery

The St.Joseph’s Monastery, Devagiri has taken a pivotal role in the educational, social and cultural development of Calicut. It is a power house of spirituality, engaging in multidimensional undertakings especially educational and social work. Through the Devagiri educational institutions, it imparts education to students studying various syllabi.

Originally established to lead and organize the construction of St.Joseph’s College, the Monastery developed, in time, to take the lead in all the spiritual and social activities of the fathers of the province. The ashram has witnessed history in the making for over the last half century and its every nook and corner has a story to tell.

In 1956, the present monastery was set up as a residence and Fr. Shabor was appointed as its superior. The house, originally named Amala, later came to be called St. Joseph’s Monastery.

The foundation stone of St.Joseph’s Monastery and that of the college chapel adjoining it were laid on 8th February 1964.The monastery and the chapel were designed and constructed by Fr.Marinus when Fr. Richard was the superior. Fr.Columbus later completed it. The construction of the monastery was completed first and it was consecrated on 8th December 1965. It took two more years to complete the construction of the chapel and it was finally consecrated on 8th December 1967 by Rt. Rev. Dr.Aldo Maria Patroni, the Bishop of the Diocese of Calicut.Gradually the Catholic community of Devagiri and the surrounding areas grew in number and strength. As a result of the relentless effort of the monastery and considering the legitimate need of the laity, St.Joseph’s Parish, Devagiri was formally erected on 3rd July 1971 bifurcating from St.Thomas Parish, Amalapuri. It was a great moment of divine providence for the parishioners when the monastery succeeded in getting permission for a cemetery in 1986 and resolved to extend its use for the members of the parish.

In course of time, the Diocese of Thamarassery was established and a number of new parishes were formed in the city. As a result, the geographical area of Devagiri parish was considerably decreased. But its strength is still on the rise. At present there are 465 families spread through eight wards with 18 family units. The monastery presently coordinates a series of spiritual, cultural and social activities i.e.Sunday School, KCYM, CML, CWC,and St.Vincent De Paul Society. The St.Vincent de Paul Society used to serve mid-day meals to poor patients of the Calicut Medical College Hospital. This was stopped after the Calicut corporation took over this service. The society used to distribute free medicine on prescription to patients. For fifteen years Fr. Hermenegild Paikada had administered sacraments for the Catholic patients and spiritual guidance for those who needed it. The fathers of the monastery do pastoral ministry when requested.
